The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the organization that owns the GMAT, reports statistics on test-takers by region and by country of citizenship. According to GMAC, the GMAT was taken slightly more than 800 times by Colombian citizens during the most recently completed testing year. About 78% of these students intended to pursue master of business administration degrees, with the rest divided between non-MBA business master's degrees (21%) and doctor of philosophy programs (1%). The average total GMAT score for a Colombian citizen was 529. This is below the mean score of American test-takers (553) and lower than the average for the entire Mexico, Caribbean, and Latin America region (554). Selective graduate business schools usually expect GMAT total scores of 650 or higher, and the top institutions generally report median scores of at least 700. With professional instruction and sufficient student effort, upper-percentile GMAT scores can be obtained, and strong GMAT performance conveys substantial advantages in business school admissions.
